The Gold Coast is not only heaven on earth for tourists, but also my hometown!
I’m Lucy Lumen, photographer, artist and creative, and Merry People has asked me to take you around behind the golden sand and crashing waves to what I think makes the Gold Coast so special.
So grab your sunnies, hat, comfy sandals (I'm wearing the Lochie in Ocean Evergreen), and your sweet tooth - as you’ll need all of the above for today's outing!
Stop 1: The Cheesecake to End All Cheesecakes!

First stop is the Home of The Arts (HOTA) Sunday Farmers Market, where you can shop and eat locally. This is hands down the best market on the coast because of its location, but also because it's home to Basque Cheesecake ever!
Run by husband-and-wife team Laura and Zac, who I fell in love with last year when I tasted this INSANELY delicious Basque-style slice, and now, I can’t stop going back for more. But whatever you grab to go, it’s best enjoyed taking in the HOTA lake - the perfect spot for catching a breeze and people watching. This lake is topped up by the run-in tide, so it’s clean and safe to swim in, and one of my favourite ways to cool off in summer, far from the crowds.
Stop 2: Enjoy Art with A View

HOTA gallery is the Gold Coast’s modest answer to NGV. My favourite place to visit for creative inspiration, and the staff are always up for a chat too.
I had the incredible opportunity of having one of my photographs in a recent exhibition here showcasing Gold Coast artists, so it’s a wonderful community-driven spot well worth a visit. Air con is also welcome in this QLD heat!
The gift shop is great for grabbing a little memento or art book, and the 360-degree view from Level 5 is incredible, stretching over the entire Arts Precinct and waterfront. It was a bit early for us, but the Rooftop bar 'The Exhibitionist' has a carefully selected wine list and artist-inspired cocktail list that is well worth trying.
Stop 3: Strolling Into Surfers Paradise

The HOTA Bridge is an artful structure that connects pedestrians to Chevron Island, and from there it’s only a short stroll over to the always-on Surfers Paradise!
This is my go-to spot for photography because it’s a bit lost in time and has that old Gold Coast charm, which I love to document. By now it’s getting hot, so we head down to the oceanfront for a breezy beach walk and to dip our toes in the water.
This kind of situation is exactly why I adore the Lochie Sandals so much, because they are practical for walking on the sand and rocks, and then I can simply rinse them off and be on my merry way. I’m so impressed at how they don’t rub on my feet at all and dry so quickly, too. They’re like a miracle pair of sandals, haha!
Okay, I’m getting hungry now...
Stop 4: An Unbelievably Good $12 Lunch

Yes, you did read that right…$12!
Blossoming Lotus is my hidden gem secret lunch spot that is probably the last lunch bargain to be had on the Gold Coast. It’s a full vegan menu, but trust me, you do not have to be vegan to enjoy it! Everyone I bring - even the meat lovers - is blown away by the bold Thai flavours and, of course, the price!
I love supporting small businesses that aren’t all about their Instagram-worthy menu items and more about wholesome, good-quality, honest food that makes you smile.
More of My Must-See Special Mentions:
There is so much more on offer on the Gold Coast. Here are a few other faves to check out.
- Burleigh Baker - the pistachio cookie is divine, and the sourdough is loved by locals.
- Restaurant Labart is an award-winning dining open for lunch and dinner. A little bit posh but perfect for date night or Sunday lunch.
- Flor Grocer for a wine shop and bar with an incredibly cool fit out.
- The Sensory Boutique - my fave place to shop, and worth the visit to explore the quaint Mudgerabah Village area.
- Cantina is the best little bar on the GC! This place is all vibes, and its family run by passionate hospo veterans.
- Miami Hill has the best view and is great for kids, as there is a playground and rocks to explore on the beachfront.
- Don’t forget NSW is only a short drive from the GC too, so cross that border and get the best of both states!
