“As a podiatrist and mum, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about feet. From tiny toddler toes to school and sports wear footwear needs through to the demands of growing teens. What is evident to me - professionally and personally - is how the habits we create early shape the way we walk, run, jump and move later in life.
Personally, I’m a big fan of any footwear that makes getting out the door easier and more fun. Professionally, I’m even more excited when I see thoughtful design that supports healthy foot development!
So when I got the chance to try out Merry People Kids Boots with my own daughter, I was frothing (yes, frothing!) to put them to the test; not just from a parenting perspective, but through the lens of foot health and development.
And let me tell you…we’ve never had so much fun in puddles!
Why Your Kids’ Footwear Matters (Even Gumboots!)
Let’s start here. I think there’s still a myth that gumboots are just for rainy, winter days, and they don’t have to fit properly, as they aren’t “proper” shoes.
I’m here to lovingly bust this, because the bones in little feet are still soft and forming during childhood, so every shoe your child wears has a big impact on growing feet.
Think about it this way: you wouldn’t put our kids in a jumper that’s too tight to move in, so why would you want shoes that squash their toes, rub, or slip around?
3 Tips for Choosing The Best Gumboots For Kids
1. Fit Matters
Look for boots with removable insoles (both Andie and Bobbi boots pass the test here!). To test for the right fit, take the insoles out and pop them on the ground for your child to stand on.
Ensure there is a thumbs-width of space between the end of the insole and their longest toe (which isn’t always the big toe!).
Remember, it’s really important to always measure both feet as it’s completely normal for one foot to be slightly bigger than the other. The key here is to make sure the insole fits the larger foot. This simple step can prevent a whole lot of rubbing and discomfort down the track.
2. Allow For Wriggle Room:
A wider toe box - like the one in Merry People kids boots - is brilliant as it gives the toes space to splay naturally as your child runs, jumps, and splashes.
Overly-narrow shoes can restrict natural movement and put pressure on soft, developing bones, so make sure toes can wriggle a little when the gumboot is on.
3. Bust The ‘Breaking In’ Myth
Shoes - and yes, boots - should feel comfortable from day one. If your child complains they’re too tight or you can see the outline of their foot pressing through, they’re not right and won’t be ‘broken in’ with repeated wear.
Having the right, comfortable fit straight away makes a big difference to how toddlers and kids walk, run, play and interact with their friends, so prioritise it to ensure a healthy stride in later life.
4 Reasons I Love Merry People Kids Boots:
We tried the Bobbi and Andie Kids Gumboots this season. Here’s why they have both become our go-to gumboots!
1. Neoprene Lining:
The neoprene lining is snug and cosy, keeping tiny feet warm even after solid puddle stomping time. It’s awesome to see this material in children’s footwear, as it’s something we commonly use with athletes to reduce friction and prevent blisters. It also makes the boots easier to get on and off, which is a win for kids and parents!
2. Reinforced Tread:
The grippy sole gives great traction, which makes for safer steps on slippery trails and muddy tracks.
3. Pull Tabs:
Genius! My little toddler can pull on her gumboots by herself (most days), which gives her confidence and independence getting into her outdoor adventures.
4. Thoughtful Design:
The taller shaft of the Andie is great for extra coverage on sloshier adventures - no digging or red marks around the ankle.
My Top 2 Takeaways, as a Parent and Podiatrist!
Encourage Conversation
At home, we’ve started talking to our daughter about having “the right shoes for the right job”. This can be anything from running shoes for adventures, ugg boots for cold winter mornings at home, and gumboots for rainy days, camping trips and busy days.
This is a simple way to ensure kids are more likely to grow up tuned into how their feet feel and what they need.
Observe Their Exploration
If your child is tripping more than usual, wearing out their shoes unevenly, hitting movement milestones late, or just doesn’t want to walk (always wanting to be carried), it could be a good idea to check in with a podiatrist who specialises in kids. These are things we help families with all the time, and early support can make a big difference in confidence and development.
So, whether you’re chasing a toddler through muddy puddles or heading off to the local park for a wander, my advice is simple: give little feet room to move, choose boots that fit well, and let your child run wild - rain or shine!"
